Michelle L. Alamo, DRI's Intellectual Property Litigation Committee Chair, is a partner in Armstrong Teasdale LLP's Denver office. Michelle focuses on complex business and IP litigation in federal courts in Michigan and elsewhere, including antitrust, patent, and e-discovery matters involving the automotive, telephone, and insurance industries.


Emily A. Bayton

Emily A. Bayton is a partner and Co-Practice Group Leader of Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP 80-lawyer Intellectual Property practice group. She also serves as the Co-Chair of the firm's Sports and Outdoor Recreation industry team. Her primary focus is helping her clients protect and defend their intellectual property in the United States and around the world. She has 15 years of experience advising clients on trademark, copyright, trade secrets and rights of publicity matters. Ms. Bayton represents clients in cases involving trademark infringement and dilution, copyright infringement, trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition and cybersquatting. She has considerable experience representing clients before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Ms. Bayton writes and speaks frequently on the intellectual property issues affecting sports teams and athletes. She has discussed sponsorships, merchandising, domain names licensing, broadcast rights and brand identity in the sports world on Bloomberg Radio's Bloomberg Law. Her articles on sports IP issues have appeared in Sports Business Journal, Law360.com, and Sports Litigation Alert.

She represents corporations, private individuals, and insurance companies with special emphasis on high exposure and significant injury cases. The Honorable Andrew J. Guilford
US District Court Central District of California

The Honorable Andrew J. Guilford sits in the Southern Division of the Central District of California, where he is a Patent Pilot Program Judge. He has sat by designation with the Federal and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal. Before becoming a judge, Andrew Guilford was a trial lawyer with Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton. He received his AB degree in economics summa cum laude from UCLA in 1972 as a Regent Scholar, and his JD degree in 1974, also from UCLA, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was an associate editor of the Law Review. Judge Guilford serves on the Committee on Codes of Conduct of the Judicial Council of the United States; is a founder of the Howard T. Markey Intellectual Property American Inn of Court; is a Contributing Editor of the Rutter Group's Federal Civil Procedure Before Trial; and is an Adjunct Professor at the UC Irvine School of Law. Judge Guilford's volunteer services have included serving as President of the Public Law Center, and the State Bar Commission on Access to Justice. He was awarded the State Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award and the Poverty Law Center Outstanding Service Award.


Tracy J. Holland

Tracy J. Holland recently joined the legal team at Expedia, Inc. as senior director supporting the HomeAway (VRBO) business, based in Austin, Texas. She was previously general counsel of Wayne Fueling Systems (and its predecessors under Dresser, Inc. and General Electric. Tracy has lived in Austin since 2004, when she joined Dell for her first job as in-house counsel. Before going in-house, Tracy spent seven years as a litigator in San Francisco—at Bronson, Bronson & McKinnon, handling a variety of commercial disputes, and later at Howrey Simon Arnold & White, where she focused exclusively on IP cases. Tracy received her JD from U.C. Hastings in 1997, and currently serves on its board of trustees.


James J.S. Holmes

James J.S. Holmes is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Clyde & Co. Jim is an active member of the American Bar Association. He is currently on the Standing Committee of Governmental Affairs and is a member of the Council for the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). Jim previously served on the Diversity 360 Commission and is the immediate past Chair of the ABA Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI). He is a past chair of the TIPS Media Privacy and Defamation Law General Committee and former vice chair of that section's Committee on Diversity in the Profession. Jim is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the California Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and National LGBT Bar Association and is a member of the Board of Governors for the LGBT Bar Association of Los Angeles. Jim has received a commendation from the California Bar Association for his pro bono work for Los Angeles HIV and AIDS Legal Services Alliance, the Benjamin Aranda Outstanding Public Service award from the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He has authored the chapter "Using bar association participation to build a bridge to equality" for Attracting, Advancing and Retaining LGBT Lawyers, ARK Group, 2009 and was named "Volunteer of the Year" by the Los Angeles Superior Court for his service as a temporary judge.

Mary Re Knack is a member of the Healthcare and Litigation Departments at Ogden Murphy Wallace. Her practice focuses on insurance, healthcare and civil matters. The Honorable Marcia S. Krieger

US District Court for the District of Colorado

The Honorable Marcia S. Krieger has served as the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. She has been a judge for more than 22 years; she was first appointed to the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado in 1994, then served as its Chief Judge. In 2002, she was nominated by the President of the United States and unanimously confirmed by the Senate to serve on the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. In addition, she has served on the Tenth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel and by designation with the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has served on numerous Committees of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the Federal Judicial Center, and on various local and national projects.


Robert T. Maldonado

Robert T. Maldonado specializes in intellectual property litigation, including patent, trademark, copyright, false advertising and unfair competition matters in federal court. He has negotiated and drafted major intellectual property licensing agreements, in areas such as consumer products, as well as pharmaceuticals. He has extensive litigation experience at both the trial court and appellate court levels, as well as before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He has served as President of the Hispanic National Bar Association, and is a member of the New York Intellectual Property Lawyers Association and the National LGBT Bar Association. Robert received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his J.D. from Stanford Law School.

The Honorable Kristen L. Mix
US District Court for the District of Colorado

The Honorable Kristen L. Mix graduated from Middlebury College, cum laude, with a degree in English. She obtained her J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law and practiced law in Denver until 2007, when she was appointed to the federal bench. Magistrate Judge Mix's expertise prior to her appointment was in labor and employment law. In 2006 and 2007, Judge Mix was recognized as a top employment lawyer by Chambers U.S.A. and named one of the top twenty-five women lawyers in Colorado by 5280 Magazine. Magistrate Judge Mix serves on the Judicial Conference of the United States' Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judge System. She also serves on the United States District Court for the District of Colorado's Local Rules Committee. She is the Tenth Circuit representative to the Federal Magistrate Judges' Association Board of Directors and chaired the FMJA's 2012 Convention Committee. Judge Mix is also a member of the Sedona Conference's Working Group 1, which provides guidance on issues relating to discovery in the state and federal courts. Magistrate Judge Mix is a member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Family Medicine Institute and is on the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. She is the judicial co-founder of the Colorado Intellectual Property American Inn of Court. She is proud of her efforts to promote diversity in the legal profession through her Dream Team, which recently created a public-service internship program for second and third-year law students. She is a frequent writer and speaker on the law.

He has handled well over 100 intellectual property litigation matters, including a $32.5 million victory earlier this year in a trademark case. Prior litigation experience includes a recent defense jury verdict in a copyright trial, two successful oppositions to preliminary injunctions in trademark cases this year, a $47 million verdict in a copyright/trade secret trial, and multiple successful summary judgments in favor of defendants in copyright cases. Mr. Shaw was named a "Super Lawyer" in 2017 by Los Angeles magazine and prior to that he was named a "Rising Star" for 8 years, and honored as one of the "2015 Top 25 Orange County Rising Stars" and "Top 100 Southern California Rising Stars. Simon Tam is an award-winning marketing and communications professional, musician, author, entrepreneur, and keynote speaker Simon is founder of TAM Good Marketing & PR, a firm that specializes in outsourced and culturally competent digital outreach. He is best known as the founder and bassist of The Slants, the world's first and only all-Asian American dance rock band. He recently helped expand freedom of speech through winning a unanimous victory at the Supreme Court of the United States for a landmark case in constitutional and trademark law (Matal v. Tam). Recently, he was recognized as a Freedom Fighter by the Roosevelt Rough Writers, named Citizen of the Year from the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Portland Lodge, Portland Rising Star from the Light a Fire Awards, received a Distinguished Alum Award from Marylhurst University, and has earned 34 awards for his marketing campaigns work. He serves as board chair for the APANO United Communities Fund, and member/advisor for Know Your City, Color of NOW, and the Cultural Resource Centers Advisory Council for Portland State University.
