DRI Cares
Open Books, a nonprofit based in Chicago, provides literacy experiences for tens of thousands of readers each year through inspiring programs and the sale of donated books. Through their Book Grants, they provide readers of all ages with engaging, appropriate, and high-quality books. Each week, they deliver thousands of books to schools and nonprofits across Chicagoland. Open Books has recently partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to present Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Chicago. The Open Books Imagination Library program will provide every child between 0-5 in Chicago with access to free, age-appropriate books directly to their homes. The books arrive by mail every month from birth until the child turns 5. Each book is brand new and carefully selected by a panel of experts on childhood literacy and early education.
Every year Women in the Law incorporates a philanthropic activity or fundraiser to support during its seminar. With our virtual format this year, we are proud to announce we will be supporting Open Books through our fundraising efforts.

Open Books' friends, Laura and Paul Mishkin, have agreed to match dollar-for-dollar every gift Open Books receives during their spring fundraising drive—up to $30,000! DRI is effectively kicking off this drive and the Mishkins are thrilled to be part of this drive.
Here is how you can think about your gifts:
- $25 provides one year (one book a month) of brand-new books to a 0-5 year-old through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
- $50 provides books for 5 children through our traditional book granting program.
- $100 funds one Storytime program to provide babies and toddlers activities, such as read-alouds, sing-a-longs, and early phonics play, to develop foundational literacy skills.
- $250 funds two weeks of our Reading Buddies program, in which Open Books provides one-on-one or small-group supports for struggling early readers (grades 1-3).
- $500 provides a scholarship for a high schooler to participate in our Publishing Academy program, through which s/he writes his or her first novel.
