DRI’s annual Young Lawyers Seminar is a unique program designed to help young lawyers develop business, communicate more effectively with senior lawyers, achieve partnership status, and become skilled superstars. DRI is proud to bring its inaugural Government Enforcement and Corporate Compliance Seminar to the nation’s capital. Sweeping changes over the past decade have caused corporations, business executives, and in-house counsel to change the way they view their relationship with government agencies. For those who represent clients in today’s business environment, this seminar offers timely and hard-hitting presentations by experts, addressing the ever-increasing risk of civil, regulatory, and criminal liability for corporations and those who run them. Presentations and panel discussions will cover a broad spectrum of substantive areas and offer perspectives from in-house and outside counsel, government prosecutors, and officials.

This webcast will provide an overview of the fundamentals of the hearsay evidentiary rule—Federal Rule of Evidence 801. During the initial overview, the speaker will identify hearsay statements, analyze the impact of a declarant’s availability, cover the most frequently used exceptions to the hearsay rule, explain hearsay within hearsay problems, and clarify the foundational requirements for admitting hearsay as trial evidence. After the fundamentals overview, the speaker will focus on emerging and current hearsay issues pertaining to other similar incidents, governmental reports, child hearsay statements, co-conspirators, former testimony, and social media statements.

The current United States Supreme Court docket is shaping up to be another blockbuster year for class actions and aggregate litigation. By the end of the term, the Court is expected to issue decisions in five class action cases, as well as one collective action case under the Fair Labor Standards Act. DRI’s national Class Actions Seminar will once again bring together counsel for the defendants involved in those Supreme Court cases, as well as nationally and internationally renowned practitioners, to discuss the cutting-edge issues impacting class action law and offer practical advice on defending these cases. In addition, respected in-house counsel will provide their views on multiple aspects of the defense of class actions. DRI’s Construction Law Seminar is designed to enhance the practice of all construction industry professionals—from experienced defense attorneys, to risk managers, to construction executives, and even to those who are new to construction litigation. This year’s program will focus on the experienced litigator seeking to develop advanced skills in construction law. Topics include a roundtable discussion from the nation’s largest homebuilders, effective storytelling in a construction case, and emerging trends in construction defect insurance coverage. DRI is proud to present a number of nationally known speakers on all of these timely topics. The seminar also will include a hands-on presentation showcasing a construction technique to provide insight into the actual construction work that underlies the claims. There will also be a Wednesday afternoon session for those new to construction claims. The seminar is a must attend for those involved in the construction industry.

The DRI Life, Health and Disability Committee is once again sponsoring a program for lawyers who are new to the practice. The program will be taught by highly experienced attorneys and will be aimed at providing a basic understanding of the concepts applicable to life, health and disability litigation. Rave reviews followed the inaugural program in 2011. Young lawyers and older lawyers who are new to the practice or who wish to brush up on their skills are encouraged to attend! To encourage the classroom atmosphere, registration will be limited to 50 persons.
