Tending Joy: DRI Foundation Champions Well-Being Week in Law 2026

By Catherine C. Dugan

Well-Being Week in Law will take place May 4-8, 2026! The DRI Foundation is proud to partner with the Institute for Well-Being in Law to raise awareness about mental health in our profession. The theme of Well-Being in the Law 2026 is "Tending Joy." WWIL states, "Tending joy doesn't mean minimizing real challenges - it means equipping ourselves to face them." Their website, wellbeingweek.org, includes daily schedules and resources to support any level of participation that works for you and your firm!

This week of focus on attorney mental health was born out of an ABA task force, formed in 2016 with the goal of improving the legal profession's mental health. As the task force worked, they learned that attorneys have a disproportionate amount of alcoholism, anxiety, depression, and suicide. The first annual Lawyer Well-Being Week was held in 2020. The following year, the name was changed to Well-Being Week in Law, to encompass non-attorneys in the legal profession as well.

Each day of Well-Being Week focuses on a specific aspect of well-being:

  • Monday - Stay Strong (Physical Well-Being)
  • Tuesday - Align (Spiritual Well-Being)
  • Wednesday - Engage & Grow (Career & Intellectual Well-Being)
  • Thursday - Connect (Social Well-Being)
  • Friday - Feel Well (Emotional Well-Being)

Offerings for each day include activities, like an "Awe Walk" or "Photo Walk" to help us shift our focus outward and foster awareness and connection, articles on various topics to read at your own pace, and live webinars. The DRI Foundation will be highlighting these daily resources throughout the week on social media, so stay tuned!

To observe Well-Being in Law week yourself, the DRI Foundation encourages you to attend at least one of the offered webinars throughout the week. Check out DRI's upcoming May 26 webinar, " Rethinking Lawyer Mental Health: The Role of Neurodivergence in High Performance," and find additional on-demand programs on the DRI for Life page, with programs including "How Attorney Wellness Leads to Attorney Retention: Tips + Tools for Your Firm" and "Warning Signs vs. Well-Being: How Law Firms are Effectively Focusing on Wellness."

Please also help us spread awareness by sharing our Foundation social posts on your own social media. Finally, plan a fun activity for your firm or your lawyer friends or colleagues - plan an "act of kindness" day, take a walk, turn off the screens and read a book or do a craft, take a yoga class, or plan a book discussion! However you choose to observe the week, we hope that taking this small step leads you to "Tending Joy" in your life and your profession throughout the rest of the year as well!

Catherine C. Dugan of Peterson White is the 2025-2026 President of the DRI Foundation.

Committee Spotlight Series

Cybersecurity and Data Privacy, Diversity and Inclusion, and Drug and Medical Device

DRI’s substantive law committees are an excellent way to grow your network, exchange ideas, and stay ahead of emerging issues. Joining any of DRI’s 30 substantive law committees is a great way to engage with the broader DRI community, enhance your career, and collaborate with attorneys across the country. This month, we're highlighting Cybersecurity and Data Privacy, Diversity and Inclusion, and Drug and Medical Device.

Cybersecurity and Data Privacy

DRI’s substantive law committees are an excellent way to grow your network, exchange ideas, and stay ahead of emerging issues. The Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Committee is no exception.

What This Committee Focuses On:
"Privacy as a practice area has exploded in recent years. Our committee is a great place to come talk about current legal issues you are encountering in the space, as well as to brainstorm with like-minded practitioners. For young lawyers carving out a niche in a rapidly expanding practice area, this is also a way to talk to people who have been doing it a little longer or ask questions about how to handle obligations as new laws come online. We love having all these conversations."

Join the Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Committee Today

Diversity and Inclusion

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee is specifically designed for those interested in bringing cutting-edge and thought-provoking ideas to the diversity discussion.

What This Committee Focuses On:
"The Diversity and Inclusion Committee addresses the issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion through a range of programs, projects, and opportunities. As a committee, we support one another personally and professionally. It is a safe space for everyone."

Like all DRI committees, this group offers opportunities to build relationships, contribute to publications, help plan programs, and stay informed about emerging topics in the field.

Join the Diversity and Inclusion Committee Today

Drug and Medical Device

The Drug and Medical Device Committee brings together practitioners with shared interests in defending manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and more.

What This Committee Focuses On:
The Cross-Border Disputes and Compliance Committee (formerly DRI International)’s mission is to develop a global network of lawyers focused on the challenges and requirements faced by companies operating across different countries, including navigating legal and regulatory frameworks, managing potential conflicts, and ensuring adherence to the laws of each jurisdiction involved. These areas are intertwined, as compliance with local laws and regulations is crucial for preventing disputes and facilitating smooth cross-border operations.

Whether through thought leadership, program planning, publications, or peer collaboration, committee members play an active role in shaping DRI’s work in this area.

Defense Verdict in Los Angeles Personal Injury Trial Alba Perez v Access Pacific, Inc., et al

On April 22, 2026, a jury in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Santa Monica Division returned a defense verdict in favor of defendant Access Pacific, Inc. in a personal injury action filed by Plaintiff Alba Perez. Access Pacific was represented by Oakland based trial attorney William Kronenberg. On July 25, 2020, Ms. Perez was injured at a construction site on the beach adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier.

The two-year project, known as the “North Beach Trail Project” spanned a 2.2-mile stretch of bike and pedestrian walkways on both the North and South sides of the pier. The Plaintiff entered the site after hours through a section of fence that had been separated by vandals and suffered a fall resulting in open distal radius and ulna fractures. She contended that Access Pacific had prior knowledge of similar break-ins and did not adequately secure the site. Due to the traumatic nature of the incident, she claimed to suffer from PTSD as well as orthopedic injuries. She underwent emergency ORIF surgery followed by denervation surgery and claimed a future total wrist replacement surgery was required. The pre-trial demand was $4.75M and at trial she requested an award of $11M, which was rejected by the jury who returned a full defense verdict.

Will Kronenberg has tried over 100 cases to verdict in the Federal and State courts throughout California, and the United States; this was his second defense verdict in April. Kronenberg Law specializes in the defense of catastrophic injury, wrongful death, sexual abuse, and product liability cases.
