About the Committee

Privacy as a practice area has exploded in recent years. Our committee is a great place to come talk about current legal issues you are encountering in the space, as well as to brainstorm with like-minded practitioners. For young lawyers carving out a niche in a rapidly expanding practice area, this is also a way to talk to people who have been doing it a little longer or ask questions about how to handle obligations as new laws come online. We love having all these conversations.

There is no shortage of topics for the Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Committee. The biggest issues are (1) the increased breadth, variety and frequency of cyber attacks being launched daily against organizations in the U.S. and beyond; and (2) the exponential increase in the complexity of compliance obligations, as U.S. states and other countries scramble to update their privacy laws for the 21st century, protect critical infrastructure, and deal with the cyber and privacy implications of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

The Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Committee has held lunch-and-learns that cover hot topics in the practice area. We’ve had programming covering new privacy laws in China, the threat state-sponsored hackers pose to businesses; we even had a session on the emerging issue of litigation over web tracking.

You don’t need to be practicing in this area to participate and benefit from our committee’s work. In fact, we often talk to practitioners in other areas and highlight the potential privacy concepts that they should be on the lookout for in their main areas of focus. We have seasoned cyber and privacy professionals in our group, but also many cyber-and-privacy-curious young lawyers looking to learn about this emerging area of practice.
