Video Synchronization and 3D Analysis: Cell Phones, Surveillance & Body-Worn Cameras

    Sponsored by J.S. Held

Video cameras capture important events connected to civil and criminal matters on a regular basis. With an ever-increasing number of cameras recording these events, there are instances when more than one camera is capturing the event at the same time from different vantages. Information contained in these additional cameras can aid in understanding key moments of the event. Incorporating video from multiple cameras for analysis of these events often requires synchronization of the videos. This research investigates methods of synchronization and the reliability of these methods. Video from body-worn cameras, dash mounted cameras, surveillance cameras, drone, and cell phone cameras was assessed. Audio video synchronization and issues related to synchronizing one video to another including frame rates and temporal drift were evaluated. The results describe the accuracy with which these videos can be synchronized using various methods.

Left Turning Heavy Trucks: Accelerations and Accident Analysis

    Sponsored by J.S. Held

Some of the most common collision scenarios accident reconstructionists encounter involve vehicles impacting the side of left turning tractor trailers. Determining how long it takes heavy trucks to turn is key to ultimately understanding whether other vehicles could have avoided collisions with the heavy trucks. The research presented here comprises many hours of live recordings and observations of real-world events which capture the characteristics of heavy truck movement in intersections. This naturalistic study analyzed when trucks turn, how they turn, the paths they take, and the time and speed needed for them to complete turns safely.

This webinar is free for DRI members and non-members.
