We will review how the AFL-CIO influenced government regulations, workplace standards, and the broader understanding of potential asbestos hazards during the last three decades of the 20th century. Unions during this time helped bridge the gap between the medical and scientific communities, government bodies, and the workers themselves. This historical context is important to the jury's consideration of whether a defendant's conduct met the standard of care based on the knowledge available at the time of the alleged exposure.
