Women in the Law Workshop
Re-connect, Re-engage & Rise Stronger TOGETHER
October 13, 2021
Workshop: 1:00-4:00 p.m. | Reception: 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Note: You must be registered for the DRI Annual Meeting to attend the Women in the Law Workshop.
Stephanie Scharf - former Chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Commission on Women in the Profession and former President of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL)
Paulette Brown - former ABA Present and first woman of color in that role
Stephanie and Paulette have done substantial research and analysis on the career paths of women to understand why women are "walking out the door" of private practice. The overwhelming conclusion is that women don’t leave the law, the legal profession leaves them. The burn-out that many women and lawyers of color experienced during the pandemic became particularly acute. What can we do about it?
This interactive workshop will identify how inequities can develop in law firms – in compensation, promotion, distribution of assignments, unequal attention and mentoring. Once we have recognized the broad patterns of bias, Stephanie and Paulette with provide practical, research-based responses that each of us can learn to create a path forward to the success and advancement that we want to achieve at our firms. This engaging program will draw upon the wealth of advice and research from the presenters, along with the connections and support of all attendees, to develop preventative steps that might derail professional potential and careers of women as we move into a post-pandemic era.
A WITL Committee business meeting and networking reception will follow the workshop.
